How to Play Omaha Poker

There are many variations of poker, Omaha is a variant of the Holdem type game. Omaha is similar to Texas Holdem.
To play Omaha a standard 52 card deck is used, no jokers or wild cards are used. Omaha is usually played with six or ten players at a table. The dealer is determined by a dealer button which is placed on the table in front of the dealing player. The dealer button moves around the table one player at a time in a clockwise direction. Before any cards are dealt the two players immediately to the left of the dealer have to place a blind bet into the pot. These are the small blind and the big blind they are a pre determined amount, the small blind is half the value of the big blind.

Once the blinds are placed each player is dealt four cards face down on the table, these are called the whole or pocket cards.  Then five more cards are dealt face down into the centre of the table. These are called the community cards. The players each have to compile the best five card hand consisting of two of their whole cards and three of the community cards.texas calculatem

Once each player has viewed their pocket cards it is time to start the betting. The Players can call, raise or fold. If none of the players raise, then the player who placed the blind will have the option of checking. When a player checks he stays in play but does not have to place any more chips in the pot. Once each player has bet the dealer turns over three of the community cards on the table, this is called the flop.

After the flop another round of betting occurs. Each player can call, raise or fold again depending on their hand strength. The dealer then turns over another one of the community cards in the centre of the table this is called the turn.

Once again a round of betting takes place and each player evaluates a five card hand using the community cards and their pocket cards then acts accordingly. Then the dealer turns over the last community card on the table this is called the river. Now it is time for the final round of betting. After all the remaining players have all bet the players cards are turned over and evaluated, this is the showdown.

The winner is the player with the best five card hand. Each player must use two of their pocket cards combined with three of the community cards to make their best five card hand.See Winning Hands
